Neuromedicine including Pediatric Neurology

The Department of Neurology has experienced faculty with varied research interests. It offers research facilities in the areas of diagnosis and management of various acute and chronic neurological disorders. This is backed by well-developed electro diagnostic laboratory with facilities for EEG, electroneuromyography, evoked potentials; long term video EEG, transcranial magnetic stimulation, sleep laboratory, motor physiology laboratory, magnetoencephalography and Doppler ultra-sonography. The department runs various specialty clinics for catering the varying needs of patients, which includes Neuromuscular clinic, Refractory Epilepsy clinic, Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders clinic, Headache clinic, Stroke clinic, Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica clinic, Wilson’s disease clinic, Pediatric Neurology clinic and Cognitive disorders clinic. A sub-specialty block providing services for six-different sub-specialties: movement disorders, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, pediatric neurology, stroke, and cognitive neurology will be initiated soon. The department also has specialized stroke unit, neuro critical care unit and exclusive neuro infection ward.

Surgical Gastroenterology

After a rather uncertain beginning in the early 1980s GI surgery has now become firmly established as a superspecialty in this country. Indeed it may have become the specialty of choice for most qualified Masters of Surgery having usurped cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and even urology from their former prime popularity positions. The largest numbers of applications for entry into the 13 M.Ch.(largely public) and 21 National Board Diploma(mainly private) courses are now for GI Surgery and with its flagship procedure liver transplantation, being performed successfully in more than 25 centres nationwide figuring prominently in the media, the specialty has acquired more than a touch of glamour.

Gastroenterology

Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which include the organs from mouth into anus, along the alimentary canal, are the focus of this speciality. Physicians practicing in this field are called gastroenterologists. They have usually completed about eight years of pre-medical and medical education, a year-long internship (if this is not a part of the residency), three years of an internal medicine residency, and two to three years in the gastroenterology fellowship. Gastroenterologists perform a number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including colonoscopy, endoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound and liver biopsy. Some gastroenterology trainees will complete a “fourth-year” (although this is often their seventh year of graduate medical education) in transplant hepatology, advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, motility or other topics.

Endocrinology

Endocrinology (from endocrine + -ology) is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. It is also concerned with the integration of developmental events proliferation, growth, and differentiation, and the psychological or behavioral activities of metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sleep, digestion, respiration, excretion, mood, stress, lactation, movement, reproduction, and sensory perception caused by hormones. Specializations include behavioral endocrinology[1][2][3] and comparative endocrinology.

Urology

The Neonatal training program is a three year program based on an apprenticeship model of education with additional responsibility given with progression in the program.

The NYU NPM fellowship program consists of the following components as outlined by the Program Requirements for Education developed by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and ACGME Resident Review Committee (RRC) for Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Hematology

To work as a consultant in haematology, you can begin your career as a medical doctor or as a clinical scientist. Medically-qualified doctors need to complete specialty training in haematology, while clinical scientists will need to complete Higher Specialty Specific Training (HSST) in haematology or transfusion science.

Cardiology

DM Cardiology is a 3-year, full-time post-graduate course divided into 4 semesters. Cardiology is the medical specialty that deals with disorders in heart, particularly the human heart and diagnosis and treatment of Electrophysiology, coronary disease, valvular heart disease, artery diseases, congenital heart defects, heart failure and cardiac electrophysiology.

Neurosurgery

Training to become a neurosurgeon comprises specialty training (ST1-8) and takes eight years (although this can vary according to individual circumstances). Training for neurosurgery is a run-through training, so once you are accepted (at any level) you won’t have to apply again.
